It features the voice talents of A J Glendenning, Jonathan Cooper, Ken Raney, Larry Groebe, Dona Safran, Reg Platt, Susan McMath Platt, Bryan Douglas and special guest: David Grant.

The Cliff Proton adventures are a comic take on the space heros of the past like Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers and Tom Corbett: Space Cadet. Like old time radio dramas, Texas Radio Theatre features a full cast and live sound effects. The actors will read into microphones, then music and sound effects are mixed in to create the story in your mind's eye. This is an all ages show.

On Sunday Oct 16th at 3pm the Texas Radio Theatre, in cooperation with the Arlington Museum of Art, presents two audioplays:

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet" and PG Wodehouse's "Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest" both adapted for audio by MJ Elliot.

These plays will be recorded in front of a studio audience and feature the voice talents of Ric Spiegel, Robert Clover Brown, Bryan Douglas, Andrew Kasten, Bryan Lockett, Susan McMath Platt, Reg Platt and Ken Raney.

Admission is free. A donation of $10 is suggested to help support our operating costs, and to help us bring more productions like this one to you in the future.

The Arlington Museum of Art is located at 201 West Main Street in Arlington - just south of Division, East of Cooper and West of Center (yes... we are west of Center).

No reservations are needed... we've got plenty of chairs.

Ten Years of TRTC!

October marks the tenth anniversary of the Texas Radio Theatre Company. TRTC actually started a bit earlier than October (almost a year), but that month marked our very first public performance.

Due to full schedules, this October marks our first performance in 2011, and it's going to be a good one.

This audio play won the 2004 Mark Time Honorable Mention

Rod Renegade is a special agent for the department of Homeland Security. Severely wounded in Afghanistan, he was fitted with a special computerized brain implant called "SIS" which restores his body to slightly better than normal. SIS is also a complete artificial intelligence, communications and data bank that he can talk to mentally, but several 'bugs' haven't been worked out. During one of Rod's test he meets Taipan, an international criminal who's soon to become Rod's greatest nemesis.

This is the first step alien love child (son) of Schlock Audio Theatre.

The film we poke fun at is Kinji Kukasaku’s VIRUS, a dreadfully bleak film due to its being cut to ribbons for an international audience. Virus was made in 1980 and originally starred Masao Kusakari, George Kennedy, Robert Vaughn, Chuck Connors, Olivia Hussey, Edward James Olmos, Ken Ogata, Sonny Chiba and Glenn Ford.

There is nothing like this post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie where human-kind witnesses the three way sucker punch of… 1) a killer pandemic from a genetically engineered super virus 2) Complete nuclear annihilation and 3) A half dozen famous international actors cast and directed by a woefully under budget Japanese-speaking film crew!!!

Virus! - a "Son of Schlock" audio drama that was recorded in November '09 is in the final stages of mixdown. Links will be posted here shortly -- soon after it will be available on iTunes.

According to Wikipedia the original film was released June 26, 1980. Our Schlocky send up to this swiss cheese of a film ought ...to be available well before it's 30th anniversary.

ALSO: We have a couple more raw recordings that need to me mixed down and posted to the podcast, and we hope to perform a couple of new plays for you in the near future.

At the very latest - October / November is looking very promising... (but we hope to offer something to you much sooner.)

It's a horror-adventure story that begins with a young man with aristocratic connections, but no money hoping to live with, and possibly fend off some creditors with the help of his wealthy first cousin, a man who has the curious hobby of collecting strange and dangerous exotic pets.

The short story is part of Doyle's "Tales of Terror and Mystery" collection.

After reading on Audio Drama Talk that Decoder Ring Theatre just turned four, I looked back to when Texas Radio Theatre first performed.

I knew it was sometime in October 2001... but I had to look back through my hard drive records and I found out that we were officially 8 years old YESTERDAY.

On October 15, 2001 we performed our first play in front of an audience at a Barnes and Nobel in North Richland Hills, Texas in cooperation with the Tarrant Area Guild of Storytellers.

We performed "Domingo Siete" it was an enormous hit, and no recordings exist.

We performed our second show, and OTR recreation of War of the Worlds at a the "Someplace Else Pub" in Arlington Texas on October 31st

The second show had us feeling a bit like the Blues Brothers... because the bar we performed in was filled with folks waiting for us to get done, because we were encroaching on their karaoke time.

So although we had been working on scripts and gathering people for nearly a year prior... we first performed 8 years ago yesterday -

so... Happy Birthday to us!

The cast and crew of Neil Simon's "Chapter Two" at the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas really enjoyed the music I chose for the production. So here's the playlist:

Since the play was set in the mid 90's we thought smooth Jazz would be a good genre for transitions. I ended up mainly using Jazz cuts from Sound Ideas Mix Collection. This was due to the annoying fact that most smooth jazz ends with a slow fade into oblivion. By contrast, the cuts from Sound Ideas have many glorious endings on them.

Just to let you know the next Podcast will be coming shortly.

Normally we would have posted on on Thursday or Friday, but we had plenty of things going on this last week - especially our most recent studio recording of CLIFF PROTON and the SEVEN DWARF ELEMENTS.

Unfortunately there will not be a stage performance of this Cliff Proton adventure. One of our cast members is moving out of the country, and we wanted / needed to explain his character's disappearance from the series... or wrap things up if we don't do another Cliff.

Eventually it will be available only on CD or on the web.

I can't imagine no more Cliff's - but, better safe than sorry.

We're still around - but in the shadows.

Director, Producer, Head writer and bottle washer - yours truly - have been involved in so many sound design projects - my head's spinning.

Since TRTC's last project - Alice in Wonderland, I've worked on sound for:

Watertower Theatre's "Wonderful Life", Contemporary Theatre's "SantaLand",
ICT's "Sherlock Holmes Last Case", Echo Theatre's "Nibroc trilogy", Rover Dramaworks' "Around the World in 80 days"

As I write this, I'm currently working on Slappy's Puppet Playhouse' "Charlotte's Web", ICT's "Heaven Can Wait", and Theatre Three's "Murder on the Nile"

If I had the time I'd dust off a script and organize a live performance or live recording just for the fun of it.

Maybe I'll have a break soon - and when I do, I'll post it here.

Meantime - I'm going to dust off the podcast so look for new episodes on that in the next month or so.

This weekend and next, the Texas Radio Theatre Company is presenting an audio adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Where better to experience the mad world of the Cheshire Cat, The White Rabbit, Caterpillar and Queen of Hearts than in the infinite realm of your imagination?

I couldn't think of one either... so come on down. Featuring a cast of thousands (6 actually). It's a fun show that runs just over an hour, performed in the style of old time radio, complete with bells, whistles, little doors, shoes on sticks, balloons, tubs of water, duck calls and all sorts of live sound effects.

There are three announcements regarding our little troupe.

First the podcast has been on hiatus for the summer. We'll resume the weekly podcast in September with CLIFF PROTON and the PAN DIMENSIONAL COMMISSARY.

Second through a freak accident, the TRTC is producing a sketch series for KLUV-FM called THE ADVENTURES OF ALBERTSON: THE PAPER BAG WEATHER PUPPET

Third, our next live (concrete) performance and recording will be ALICE in WONDERLAND.

The dates for that will be November 8th in Grapevine Library and November 15th - Dallas Public Library

Our Colonel Nickels play was a great success. By the time we did our last show in Irving, all the cues were being hit right - everyone was sounding good - and the energy was perfect.

It's going to be a little bit of time before we launch our next show:

Cliff Proton and the Planet of Luuuuv! (Bow Chicka Bow Wow).

The plan is to hold auditions (if we have open auditions) at the end of July.

The performance dates will be August 24th at the Arlington Museum of Art (which ought to be fully re-opened by then), August 25th at the Grapevine Library (they enjoyed having us last time, and we enjoyed performing there), August 26th at the ICT Studio in Irving, and maybe one more performance the following week. I have to figure out where.

The basic story is that Cliff is buried under in paperwork and decides that maybe it would be good to go on a simple date. He starts by asking Space Ranger Sarah out, but before he knows it, he gets more than he bargained for, and is trapped (T R A P P E D) on the Planet of Luuuuuv (Bow Chicka Bow Wow).

The Texas Radio Theatre Company in cooperation with the Arlington Museum of Art present “Colonel Nickels and the Last Brushcat of Punta Oreos” the weekend of April 20th

A comedy/adventure written by Richard Frohlich with Rodd Wayne and Rich Baker, the story is about the quintessential British explorer and adventurer known as Colonel Nickels, who in 1913 is commissioned by the London Zoo to search the jungles of South America for the very last ferocious, deadly and lonely brushcat. His mission is two-fold. To return with the brushcat and not get killed.

We hope to perform in Arlington, Grapevine and Irving. Details on specific time, date and admission ( if applicable) will be posted soon.

I've only done this once before, (I think it was a Rod Renegade show the first time... but) our January show will need to be 'repositioned' to a new month for recording.

Therefore, there will be no auditions on December 30th, and nothing new from the TRTC in the first month of 07.

Nothing bad, just too much to do - between sound design with three other theatre groups - family obligations and all sorts of other junk - I'm not going to have the time to devote to R.Renegade that he deserves.

I actually received more legitimate messages than spam today!!!!

TRTC is in the process of signing on to an email service that will hopefully prevent us from being labeled as SPAMMERS. (something anyone who does a do-it-yourself email newsletter should think about).

Because of this move - I've sent out one more email to our entire list... and this morning, my inbox was filled with replies from people who want to be on the new service. It dwarfed the ads for body part enhancement and HGH supplements by at least 10 to 1

WOW!

It's also a different feeling to get possitive feedback like that.

As you may know, radio theatre is unique. Although you will not be required to memorize a script, your talents must go far beyond the simple task of a dramatic reading. You will be expected to develop your character so that you have a clear image of how he or she fits into the story we are telling.

If you’re selected, you will be charged with the task of helping us paint an imaginary picture. Using words music and sounds, we must provide an environment into which the listener can enter through the power of imagination. Critical to our success is the use of sound effects. Unlike other forms of theatre, ours demands that actors understand and study the timing needed to blend in with the supporting sound effects.

We're recording the voice-over for Hecate Hill. This will be a bit more like readers theatre than what we normally do. We're hoping to use this recording to finish an audio play based on a frightening one act play from author Bill Fountain.

THE STORY: A group of cycling friends meet up for a reunion (and Bigfoot hunt) in a remote cabin in Southern Oklahoma. At the same time, not too far away, a group of hunters do the impossible and kill one of the creatures. Suddenly, not only does the world find out that the creatures really do exist, but they don't take kindly to one of their own being killed. An electromagnetic pulse shuts down the power all over the planet as our world is invaded by armies of angry creatures.

Meanwhile, out in the dark woods, a few friends fight to survive the night. Welcome back to the bottom of the food chain.

But is any of it really happening? Will the friends survive to find out the truth about Hecate Hill?

FACT OR FICTION? A recent rash of Bigfoot sightings and reports on the news all taking place in Oklahoma and Texas and within 50 miles of where Fountain set his fictional play? Life imitates art?

THE LOWDOWN: “HECATE HILL” promises to be an interesting afternoon of original radio theater. A One Act play, suitable for general audiences, about what happens when the things that go bump in the night decide to step out of the darkness. It's an excellent show - and permit me (as a sound designer) to say that it's one of the more interesting sound designs I've done lately - it's more than just police sirens and musical scene transitions - it's like an audio-gumbo of underscored emotion, subtlety... and a few 'push you back into your seat' cues to keep it all 'Nawlins'.

The Whisper is an action-mystery audio play with a full cast and sound effects. This episode is written and directed by Richard Frohlich and features the voice talents of: David DeFalco, Jerri Hall, Richard Milla, Kelly Scott, and Bob White.
Our shows are typically suited for all ages. The play and accompanying shorts will run under 90 minutes including one intermission (depending on the venue).

The Story:
The Whisper is Kendra King, a history professor at Ivy University. She uses a mysterious ability to leave the physical boundaries of her own body to transform herself into an unseen and powerful threat against injustice, darkness and evil.
Her identity as the Whisper is known only to Conrad Gallagher – a family friend who, since accidentally learning her secret, constantly tries to assist her as her "side-kick".

In this episode she meets the spirit of Herbert Cartwright who, in an attempt to avoid legal punishment, is undergoing a procedure designed to fake and confirm his own death. The Whisper would normally attempt to expose him, however due to their unusual meeting, he may have discovered her true identity in an adventure designed to stimulate your imagination.

Our adaptations and original audio plays are presented in much the same way as in radio's golden age. Actors with scripts read into microphones while a sound effects artist uses everything from soup cans to nut shells to create the "sound image" for each scene. We take this experience out of the radio, CD or ipod and bring it to you on stage.

Well, maybe I'm not THAT flummoxed.

Only about one thing.

I tried to upload a new audio play to myspace and it's PENDING and still pending after much of a day or so. I know it says to wait, but the last few things I uploaded only took 5 minutes to get on line. I already deleted it once and uploaded it again - but I get the same thing.

Colonel Nickels -

This is a comedy audio play with a full cast and sound effects. Copies of the program will be available for all cast - programs are broadcast locally on KNTU, - a public/college/educational radio station in Denton, TX

Colonel Nickels is the greatest British explorer of the 19th and 20th Centuries, at least in his mind. With his trusted friend Henderson and his reluctant valet Butler, he sets out to discover everything that hasn’t yet been discovered.

This adventure takes us to the depths of Atlantis, where the Colonel is confronted with everything from threatening lance launching Sea Monkeys, to walking mummies and lots and lots of quicksand. A gripping adventure designed to stimulate your imagination.

Computer HELL

The lack of posts have been directly due to computer problems.

Like bricks of nitroglycerin arranged in a dominos-line fashion... or a group of mountain climbers all tied together at the waist, as Otto, the heaviest mountain climber in the world slips and falls. At that instant the others are waving at one another. One moment: a smile on their faces, the next: their hands wildly grasping at nothing more solid than mountain air as each are yanked one by one, off the edge aided by the impressive effect gravity has on Otto.

One after another my computer systems each suffered a completly unrelated but equally devistating blow.

The worst?

I was at Theatre Three two days ago, and my notebook computer - which has become filled with at least 4 unique and sizable projects suddenly had a stroke.

The 4 unique and sizable projects were stored on the notebook and only on the notebook, because I hadn't quite finished stablizing the other two systems and back up drives.

I would have started to spool off the work this week after "ALL ABOUT BETTE" opens... but that was not to be. Thankfully "ALL ABOUT BETTE" has all their sounds, and the show will be amazing. SEE IT!

Worst of all - I completely lost all recordings and effect resources to "LUNAR OUTPOST OMEGA".

Gone.

Whoever was there when we performed it, was a witness to a singular and unique event.
Sad. But I move on... I must.

Someday I might have the cash to extract the data from my little hard drive, but for now I have to say good by to it... Goodbye data.

And the moral of the story.

Back up your data early and often. Do it tonight if you haven't in a while.

This is the first (in chronological order) of three plays that we collaborated on with D.B. Humphries (Columbia Audio Theatre and Schlock Audio Theatre) about the life and spirit of Annie Oakley.

It's called "The Match" and it's based on how Annie Oakley met and bested her future husband, Frank Butler at a Thanksgiving shooting match in Ohio.

This play was recorded April and May 2004 in front of a studio audience in Arlington and Fort Worth Texas. It was produced by Shannan Frohlich and the Texas Radio Theatre Company. Directed and Engineered by Richard Frohlich.

Featured in the cast: Taffy Geisel as Annie Oakley, Michael Sean Matthews as Frank Butler. Also in the cast: Carley Carpenter, Joey Geisel, John Kelly, Eric Knapp, Curt Mega and Elise Perea.

Jack Hardcastle and the case of the Sacred Cold Cream

It featured the voice talents of: Alexandra Boyd Rodgers, Marlene Dooley, Jesse Griffith, Clark Hackney, Katherine Johnson, Bob White and Ken Raney. Live sound effects were performed by Angie Payne and Jennifer Parson. It runs just under 30 minutes.

Jack Hardcastle is a hard-boiled, gritty cosmetics salesman who owns a shop that's open 24 hours. He savagely provides health and beauty aids to a city that pretends it doesn't care.

In this episode, recorded February 2005, Jack finds himself in the middle of a twisty turny murdery mystery surrounding a sacred cold cream and the supernatural powers it might have. The cream is rumored to have been Marie Antoinette's, and is kept in a "grail"... and Jack is framed for a murder... then he's rescued from the police by a woman... and they both have to find out if the cold cream really has an age reversing formula... sound familiar?

Sure it does...

So check out our courageous attempt at a "lifeless adaptation that reveals the flaws of its source"... it's all in good fun.

Synopsis:

Mike "Razor" Ferro, an ex astronaut was drummed out of NASA because he heard voices he couldn’t explain. Years later a crew of an outpost on the moon claimed they heard voices, just before they lost contact. Around the same time, a Chinese lunar mission disappears.
The US suspects China is not telling all they know about either event. China is accusing the US of the same. In the meantime, NASA’s asking Mike about those voices he heard years ago, and now he’s hearing them again - but this time one sounds like a of member of the lost lunar outpost - his son.

Mitch Carr, Larry Groebe and Shannon Atkinson are scheduled to read 3 different parts of Homer Hickam’s October Sky (Rocket Boys)

Homer Hickam is is a Vietnam veteran, a scuba instructor, a retired rocket scientist, and an amateur paleontologist. More than anything else, he loves to write. He lives in the Virgin Islands and Huntsville, Alabama.

Arlington Reads , the fourth-annual community-wide read, will take place in March and April 2006. This program is a collaborative project of the Arlington Public Library, University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington Independent School District, and Reading & Radio Resource. This year, junior high school students through adults will read October Sky (originally published as Rocket Boys) and elementary school students will read Flight: The Journey of Charles Lindbergh.

As you may know, radio theatre is unique. Although you will not be required to memorize a script, your talents must go far beyond the simple task of a dramatic reading. You will be expected to develop your character so that you have a clear image of how he or she fits into the story we are telling.
If you’re selected, you will be charged with the task of helping us paint an imaginary picture. Using words music and sounds, we must provide an environment into which the listener can enter through the power of imagination. Critical to our success is the use of sound effects. Unlike other forms of theatre, ours demands that actors understand and study the timing needed to blend in with the supporting sound effects.

On Friday (2/17) our friends at the British Emporium of Grapevine will be providing HOT TEA for your chilly ears as we record our newest audio play.

Set in the far and distant future, Cliff Proton is a space ranger for the Earth Space Federation. Each episode he, his robot and Doctor Heterodyne save the galaxy from some kind of nasty villain. So far, he’s tackled The Creature from Quadrant Five, the curiously familiar space Vikings from Dimension Q and alternate versions of himself and his friends in (where else) an alternate universe.

NOTE: Some have pointed out that pouring tea in your ears to warm them up is not recommended (even when using the finest grade of Oolong). Please ingest tea orally by using a mug, tea cup or 'beaker' as one might say in Britain. Also, while we're on the subject of tea drinking, never put a cup of water WITH a teabag in your microwave. You boil the water first, and then put the teabag in for 2 to 3 minutes. You may think this takes twice as long to make a cup of tea, but trust me, it's worth it. This play features the voice talents of: Jonathan Cooper, AJ Glendenning, David Grant, Larry Groebe, Jerri Hall and Pamela Heeth. Live sound effects by Bob White, Ken Raney and members of the cast.

Our shows are for all ages. This play will run under 80 minutes including one intermission. The performances will be recorded for a later broadcast on KNTU, Denton other affiliated stations.

Our adaptations and original audio plays are presented in much the same way as in radio's golden age. Actors with scripts read intomicrophones while a sound effects artist uses everything from soup cans to nut shells to create the "sound image" for each scene.Instead of only performing to unseen listeners over a radio, we bring the experience to a studio audience.

Sherlock Holmes episodes out of order -

There was a little snafu with this week's show on KNTU-FM. As you've probably guessed, we do not engineer the shows live - but send our programs up to the station ahead of time.

I tuned in thinking I would hear episode 2 of The Ambercrombie Forgery... but I heard episode 3 instead. These things happen.

They will air episdode 2 this coming weekend (1/29) , and then follow it by a repeat of episode 3 (2/5). That just means that Decoder Ring Theatre gets bonus air-time.

So if you tuned in and wondered where episode 2 went... it's this week. Not quite as critical as missing an episode of LOST... but still not what we planned to do.

A Christmas Carol - Broadcast 12/23 & 25

On Christmas weekend KLUV, 98.7fm in Dallas will broadcast a new recreation of "A Christmas Carol".

On Monday 12/12, the Texas Radio Theatre went to the studios of KLUV and recorded Jody Dean, Kathy Jones, Mitch Carr and many other folks at the station as they voiced the characters for their own version of this holiday classic.

This audioplay will be broadcast on December 23rd and December 25th at 8pm in Dallas on 98.7FM

KLUV is not streamed on the web / but I will ask if I can podcast it at a later date.

The Story: Sam is the boss of the Biscotti family business, a shady organization in the city. Sam is dropped off at this nightclub where he believes his annual Christmas party is about to take place. He had left all the planning to Frankie, his son. Frankie is using the opportunity to get rid of his father and take over the family business. All the plans are suddenly ‘messed up’ when Amaretta, a disoriented old lady, wanders onto the scene and changes everyone’s lives forever.

This Texas Radio Theatre Company production features the voice talents of Luis Alford, Lee Dunkelberg, Cynthia Matthews, Susan McMath-Platt, Reg Platt and Ken Raney.

Catch us on the web Wednesdays from 7pm to 8pm via their STREAMING AUDIO

Student-operated UTA Radio airs on line - 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is a division of the Communication Department at the University of Texas at Arlington.

For Arlington, TX residents, this station is also broadcast on Arlington cable channel 76
